Jerrycans and Buckets: Collapsible or Rigid for Camp Distribution?

Buy rigid for a settled camp, collapsible only for the first lift in. A rigid 20-litre jerrycan ships at 0.025 m³ and is UV treated for at least five years; a collapsible 20-litre ships at 3.6 litres, seven times more per cubic metre, and lasts a fraction as long.

What is the standard humanitarian jerrycan specification?

Both families are built around food-grade plastic, a defined opening and a drop test, and there they diverge.

  • Rigid: 20 litres, new HDPE with recycled plastic not permitted, 1 kg (±5%), an inlet of at least 50 mm inner diameter, two consecutive drops from 1.5 m filled, and UV treated for a minimum of five years, per the ICRC/IFRC standard products catalogue.

  • Collapsible: food-grade LDPE free of toxic elements under EN 1186 and EN 13130 and compliant with EU Regulation 10/2011, at 10 and 20 litres, minimum 180 g and 270 g, with a tethered screw cap, surviving at least three of ten drops from 2 m, per the ICRC/IFRC foldable jerrycan specification.

  • Semi-collapsible: UNHCR's 10-litre recycled item requires a 50 mm opening with a retaining strap, at least 30% food-grade recycled plastic, and a minimum six months of use under tropical conditions, per the UNHCR item specification HH-JC-10014.

Quantity is set by Sphere: at least two clean collection and storage containers of 10 to 20 litres per household, narrow-necked and covered against contamination.

What do the transport numbers actually say?

The freight case for collapsible is real and it is large. At 0.025 m³ per rigid 20-litre unit against 3.6 litres per collapsible one, a cubic metre carries roughly 40 rigid jerrycans or about 278 collapsible. On an air bridge into a cut-off county, that ratio decides how many households the aircraft covers.

It stops being decisive once cargo moves by road and the population stays put. Collapsible is the cheaper thing to fly and the dearer thing to replace, so a saving taken in week one comes back as resupply by month six. Beyond a single quarter, buy rigid for the drinking-water container and keep collapsible for air freight and the first 72 hours.

Which container lasts, and where does the water get dirty again?

Watch which life figure you are reading. The foldable jerrycan's ten-year figure is shelf life in original packaging between -10°C and 50°C, not time in a household's hands; UNHCR puts service life for its semi-collapsible item at six months in tropical conditions, against five years of UV-treated durability for the rigid item.

Opening size is the quieter trade-off. The foldable standard allows an inlet as narrow as 30 mm against the rigid item's 50 mm minimum, which resists hands and dipping cups but makes scrubbing the interior harder, and a container nobody can clean is the weak link in a chlorination programme. In South Sudan refugee camps, between 40% and 58% of households drawing from chlorinated tapstands had no detectable residual chlorine in their stored water, per the Bulletin of the World Health Organization (2015). Where does a bucket with a lid beat both?

For everything that is not the drinking-water container. The ICRC/IFRC plastic bucket with lid has a clipped cover, a 50 mm opening, a reinforced handle and a removable cover with rounded inner edges so it can be cleaned, and it stacks at 160 pieces per m³, or 4,320 pieces in a 20-foot container with pallets, per the ICRC/IFRC bucket catalogue. The catalogue's sustainability sheet records that it was designed to replace the rigid jerrycan and saves 66% of the volume for transport.

Distribute both. A lidded bucket takes carriage, bathing and laundry, keeping those out of the jerrycan holding treated drinking water.
