Why the 67mg tablet is the right specification for humanitarian WASH programmes
Aquatabs come in several tablet sizes — 8.5mg, 17mg, 33mg, 67mg, and 167mg — each formulated for a different water volume. The 67mg tablet is the standard humanitarian dose because it matches the containers actually used in the field.
A single 67mg tablet delivers a measured dose of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) that releases 40mg of free available chlorine — enough to treat 20 litres of relatively clear water. That corresponds exactly to the standard 20-litre jerrycan distributed in NFI kits and used at community water points across South Sudan, the DRC, Uganda, and beyond.
For programmes treating water at the jerrycan or household container level, specifying 67mg reduces tablet count, simplifies airlift, and aligns with the formulation that IOM, UNHCR, and UNICEF have already standardised on in their pipelines. For a full technical comparison, see our article Aquatabs 33mg vs 67mg: Key Differences and Why 67mg Is Better for South Sudan
Six reasons programmes across East Africa specify Aquatabs 67mg

Proven pathogen kill
Effective against Vibrio cholerae, E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Shigella, Hepatitis A, and Rotavirus. Safe drinking water in 30 minutes from contact.

Compact and airliftable
16,000 tablets per carton. A single pallet treats millions of litres of water — a decisive logistical advantage over liquid chlorine.

One tablet, one jerrycan
Dose-matched to the 20-litre jerrycan. No measuring, no guesswork. Reduces training burden for community health workers and end users.
Safe to handle
16,000 tablets per carton. A single pallet treats millions of litres of water — a decisive logistical advantage over liquid chlorine.

Five-year shelf life
Long-duration stability allows contingency stockpiling and pre-positioning in advance of rainy seasons and cholera outbreak windows.

No taste, no colour
16,000 tablets per carton. A single pallet treats millions of litres of water — a decisive logistical advantage over liquid chlorine.
Field applications across East and Central Africa
Aquatabs 67mg are deployed at scale across the region in five main programme contexts. Each has different procurement rhythms and volume requirements — our team can advise on the right quantity and delivery schedule for yours.
1. Cholera and acute watery diarrhoea response
South Sudan's current cholera outbreak is the largest on record, with active transmission across nine states. Aquatabs 67mg are distributed directly at the household level alongside hygiene kits in affected counties. When paired with P&G Purifier of Water for turbid sources, they form the standard two-product household water treatment (HWT) response that WASH Cluster partners deploy in outbreak zones.
2. Flood-season displacement
When the Nile, Pibor, and Sobat systems flood between June and October, boreholes across Jonglei, Unity, and Upper Nile are contaminated by surface water. Aquatabs 67mg are pre-positioned in Juba, Malakal, and Bentiu before the rains to supply IDP sites and host communities through the peak season. Cross-border operations into the DRC follow a similar pattern around Lake Albert and eastern Congo river systems.
3. Refugee and IDP settlement WASH
Uganda hosts the largest refugee population in Africa — over 1.5 million people across settlements in the West Nile and south-west. Aquatabs 67mg are supplied through framework agreements with OPM, UNHCR, and implementing partners, treating both water trucked into tanks and household water stored in jerrycans.
4. Schools, clinics, and institutional water points
Primary schools and rural health centres across South Sudan and northern Uganda often lack piped water. Aquatabs 67mg are a simple, low-cost treatment option for water drawn from boreholes or rainwater tanks, keeping children and patients protected from waterborne disease without requiring any infrastructure investment.
5. Commercial and cross-border supply
Beyond humanitarian programmes, Aquatabs 67mg are supplied into commercial channels for extractive industry camps, construction sites, hospitality operators, and retail distribution in markets with weak municipal water. SLS currently holds exclusive distribution rights for key purification products in South Sudan and supports export enquiries into neighbouring markets including Jordan, where trial shipments via sea freight from regional hubs are actively being supported.
How to use Aquatabs 67mg: Four Simple steps

1.Fill a 20-litre jerrycan or container with the clearest water available. Pre-filter through clean cloth if the water is visibly turbid.

2. Drop — With dry hands, one tablet from the foil strip. Drop the tablet directly into the water without touching it.

3. Mix — Place the lid on and shake or stir gently to distribute. The tablet dissolves fully within 2-3 minutes.

4. Wait — Leave the water for 30 minutes before use. A faint chlorine smell confirms treatment is working. If no smell, re-treat with a second tablet.
