The Real Cost of Running a Diesel Pump in Remote South Sudan

How much fuel does a diesel pump actually burn?
Start from the manufacturer's own number rather than an estimate. The Aussie Pumps MQ600TD, a 6-inch self-priming trash pump driven by an 80HP Deutz F4L914 air-cooled diesel and rated to 6,000 litres per minute, carries a 152-litre fuel tank in the skid base and runs approximately 11 hours between refuels at about 12 litres per hour, per its manufacturer specification sheet. The smaller Aussie QP-60TD, a 24.8HP Kubota D1105 unit rated to 4,200 litres per minute, carries 60 litres for approximately 10 hours of running, roughly 6 litres per hour, per its own specification sheet.
Turn that into planning figures before you order anything:
6-inch unit at 12 litres per hour: 120 litres per 10-hour day, about 3,600 litres a month, close to 44,000 litres a year on that duty cycle.
Smaller unit at 6 litres per hour: 60 litres per day, about 1,800 litres a month.
A two-pump dewatering site: most of a road tanker every month, in a place where road tankers are the constraint.
Treat those as the floor. Manufacturer figures are quoted at a rated duty, and a pump working near its maximum head, moving solids or fitted with a long discharge line will draw more. The first line of any diesel pump budget is litres per running hour multiplied by planned running hours, written down before the purchase order rather than discovered in month three.
Why the pump-head price is the small number
Fuel overtakes the equipment quickly. A typical diesel borehole pump spends more than US$5,000 a year on fuel, around 40 per cent of the initial system cost, every year, on top of higher maintenance, per the World Bank's Solar Pumping: The Basics. On that arithmetic the pump has paid for itself in fuel roughly every two and a half years, and it never stops. Remote siting makes it worse: diesel pumps carry high operating costs in remote areas and need frequent servicing that is not always available, per the FAO and GIZ review of solar-powered irrigation systems.
Then add the South Sudan price line, which has moved sharply this year. Fuel prices have doubled since March 2026, driving up transport costs, and despite being an oil producer the country depends on imported refined fuel, per OCHA's reporting on the deepening fuel crisis. Between June and July 2026 fuel prices rose 5 to 20 per cent in Juba, Rumbek Centre, Wau, Aweil Centre and Bor South, and stood 60 to 130 per cent above February 2026 levels, per FEWS NET's July 2026 South Sudan key message update.
The view we take with buyers: evaluate a diesel pump on 24 months of delivered fuel at a stressed price, not on the invoice. A cheaper pump head that burns two litres an hour more is the more expensive machine before the first rainy season ends.
What does it cost to get the fuel to the pump?
A litre in a Juba depot is not a litre at a site in Jonglei. Between the two sit road haulage or barge freight, movement permits, checkpoints, escort arrangements, drum handling and the rains. In July 2025 a Bor to Malakal river convoy carrying roughly 4,000 metric tonnes on two barges and 14 boats was blocked at the New Fangak checkpoint in Jonglei after 13 days on the water, and left stalled at Wasket, despite clearances having been secured in advance, per OCHA's humanitarian access snapshot. Every day of that delay lands on the delivered cost of whatever the barge is carrying, fuel included.
Price the delivered litre, not the depot litre, by building the stack:
Ex-depot price per litre, at today's rate rather than last quarter's.
Inland transport to site by road or barge, priced separately for dry and wet season.
Permits, escort and checkpoint costs, including the cost of the days lost.
Storage at site: drums or a bowser, decanting kit, bunding and a lockable store.
An explicit loss allowance, because pretending it is zero does not make it zero.
Filters, oils and service parts matched to the run hours you have just budgeted.
The reserve you hold in-country so a convoy delay is not an outage.
If a supplier has quoted you fuel ex-Juba, you have priced roughly half of what the pump will actually cost to run in Jonglei or Upper Nile.
Where does the fuel go when it does not go into the pump?
Static plant is the least-measured fuel in most field operations, and that is exactly where a pump sits. UNHCR field operations spent US$93 million on vehicle fuel and lubricants between 1 January 2021 and 30 October 2022, yet the reporting systems did not record fuel used in generators and motorcycles at all, per OIOS audit report 2023/026. The same audit found that irregularities in fuel and maintenance led to recoveries of more than US$1.6 million from partners in Chad, Uganda and Congo, and listed gaps in the storage and accounting of fuel, inadequate reconciliation of fuel records and limited computation of fuel consumption rates as recurring findings across country audits including South Sudan.
The control is cheap and mechanical. Specify a pump with an hour meter, which the MQ600TD carries in its control panel alongside the ammeter and tachometer, and reconcile three numbers weekly: litres issued, hours logged, and the manufacturer's litres per hour. A pump that has drawn 400 litres against 20 logged hours has a problem, and it is not a mechanical one. Sign fuel out by jerrycan against a named operator, keep the store locked and dip the drums.
What does dirty or adulterated fuel cost you?
More than the fuel. Kubota, whose D1105 engine drives the QP-60TD, specifies diesel meeting EN590 or ASTM D975 with a minimum cetane rating of 45, and for Tier 4 engines with aftertreatment, fuel below 15 parts per million sulphur, per Kubota Engine's published fuel guidance. Water, dirt, rust and microbial growth are the common causes of fuel system failure: they clog filters, starve the pump of flow and damage injection equipment that is not stocked at a field site.
The defences are unglamorous and they work. Buy through a chain you can trace back to a named importer, let fuel settle and filter it at every transfer, fit a water-separating filter and drain it on schedule, keep drums sealed, shaded and off the ground, and retain a sample from each delivery. An engine failure traced to off-spec fuel is a warranty argument you will lose, and the replacement will be flown in.
What does downtime cost when the fuel does not arrive?
This is the number that dwarfs the others. The minimum survival water standard is 15 litres per person per day for drinking, cooking and hygiene, per the Sphere Handbook, so a camp supply pump that stops is a water-supply failure within a day, not a maintenance ticket. The timing is the cruel part: by late October 2025 around 1,024,500 people were flood-affected across 29 counties, with nearly 355,000 displaced, per OCHA's floods snapshot, and the same water that raises pumping demand cuts the roads that carry the fuel. Meanwhile South Sudan recorded 71,825 suspected cholera cases and 1,194 deaths between 1 January and 17 August 2025, per WHO Disease Outbreak News DON579, and safe water supply is the intervention that holds that line.
So hold the reserve in days of run time rather than in litres, size it against the longest convoy delay you have actually experienced, and store the filters, impeller and seal kit beside it. A pump with fuel and no spare filter is as stopped as a pump with no fuel.
